Stay healthy and indulge this festive season

The festive season is well and truly upon us! 🎅🏼

It’s a time of joy, connection and (let’s be real) a lot of delicious indulgence. Between Christmas parties, family feasts, and endless trays of pavlova and all the meat trimmings, it can feel like your health goals are slipping further and further away.

But here’s the good news—you don’t have to choose between enjoying yourself and staying on track. There’s no need to fall into the “all or nothing” trap.

With a few simple strategies, you can navigate the festive chaos, keep your health goals in sight, and still say yes to your favourite treats.

Here are my top tips for thriving this holiday season:

1. Prioritise protein and produce

When faced with a buffet of tempting dishes, load your plate with protein (think prawns, turkey or ham) and fresh veggies first. This combo will keep you fuller for longer and help avoid the dreaded post-meal slump.
Bonus: the fibre will also keep your gut happy amongst all the rich foods.

2. Don’t skip brekkie

Skipping breakfast to “save calories” might seem like a good idea, but it usually leads to overindulging later. Instead, start your day with a nourishing meal like eggs, mushrooms and asparagus on toast or a fruit-and-yoghurt bowl to keep your energy stable.

3. Plan movement that feels good

It’s a busy time, so don’t stress about hitting the gym daily. Instead, aim for activities that fit into your schedule, like a quick bodyweight workout, a walk along the beach or park, or a backyard game of cricket with the family.

4. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Let’s not forget water amidst the festive fizz! For every alcoholic drink, aim to have a glass of water — it’ll keep you feeling fresher and help dodge hangovers.

5. Be realistic, not restrictive

This isn’t the time to aim for strict meal plans or PBs at the gym. Instead, focus on balance. Enjoy your favourite treats guilt-free, but keep indulgences mindful. Think of it as a chance to enjoy — not overdo.

6. Don’t skimp on sleep

Late nights are part of the fun, but they can wreak havoc on your energy, mood and cravings. Prioritise rest where you can, even if it means leaving a party a little earlier or sneaking in a nap.

7. Bring a dish you love

If you’re hosting or bringing a plate, whip up something delicious but nourishing. Think a colourful veggie salad with feta and nuts or protein-packed snacks like homemade meatballs or smoked salmon bites.

At the end of the day, the festive season is about connection, celebration, and soaking up the moment. By making mindful choices and not sweating the small stuff, you can stay on track while enjoying the best this time of year has to offer.
